Scáthach’s Training

The young Cú Chulainn was instructed in war-craft by a woman called Scáthach, whose name means ‘She Who Walks in Shadow’. Not only a fearsome battle trainer, she was also a seer who could use her powers in divination to predict future events. Her teaching was so superb that she turned Cú Chulainn into a fighting machine that no one could beat. Scáthach lived ‘in the land of Alba’ (all we know of this place is that it was somewhere to the east of Ulster, perhaps in Scotland). When the young hero travelled there, her pupils directed him to an island, reached by a bridge that nobody could cross unless already trained in war-craft. Three times Cú Chulainn tried to walk over the bridge and three times the far end of the bridge tipped up and threw him on his back. Finally, Cú Chulainn went berserk and ran so fast over the bridge that it could not unbalance him.
